“Best in Class” Enterprises Leveraging Data Loss Prevention (DLP) Solutions, Says Aberdeen Group 2010 Data Loss Prevention Report

Users Can Learn More About Using DLP in Upcoming Aberdeen Group Webcast

SUNNYVALE, Calif., August 11, 2010 –
Aberdeen Group has issued its fourth annual study on data loss prevention and concludes that companies successfully using content-aware data loss prevention to identify sensitive data and enable remediation to enforce policies have fewer incidents of lost or exposed data and lower operational cost.

The report, “Content-Aware: The 2010 Data Loss Prevention Report,” surveyed hundreds of enterprise IT administrators and managers to determine their usage of DLP and the associated benefits. Aberdeen Group vice president and research fellow Derek Brink, CISSP, will discuss the report findings and make recommendations about how organizations can learn from those already using DLP in a free webinar sponsored by Code Green Networks on August 25, 2010. For more information, see http://www.codegreennetworks.com/webinar.

Aberdeen’s report outlines how the top performers in the study are using data loss prevention technologies, and associated benefits they have achieved. Metrics include the number of actual incidents of data loss or exposure, the number of non-compliance incidents, and the number of help desk calls. Key characteristics of those organizations deemed “Best in Class” also include:

  • Discovery of and identification of sensitive data
  • Establishment of consistent policies for data at rest in back-end systems; data in flight on the network; data in use at the endpoints
  • Standardized response to incidents, including enforcement via user-based remediation

"Companies leveraging content-aware technologies improve not only the organization's ability to share its sensitive data, but also to protect it”, noted Brink. “The research shows that successful implementation of DLP can provide an immediate opportunity for IT security to act as a vitally important enabler for supporting the strategic objectives of the business."

The report also notes that areas perceived to have the highest risk of data exposure are related to the endpoints, with deployment of data loss prevention technologies as a tool to help prevent such loss trending towards DLP becoming a baseline technology. Brink notes that vendor offerings that integrate DLP increasingly are “content-aware” with the ability to analyze content in real-time and to automate controls, such as encryption or rights management, for remediation.

The report can be accessed at no charge through the end of August on Aberdeen’s web site at http://www.aberdeen.com/aberdeen-library/6575/RA-content-aware-data-loss.aspx.
Code Green Networks TrueDLP™ data loss prevention (DLP) solution accurately detects sensitive data in motion on the network, in use on the endpoint, or at rest on endpoints and servers. Its powerful Discovery capability gives administrators the ability to locate and identify sensitive data residing on servers within data centers and throughout the network.  Typical installations take a few hours and can be handled with a single appliance or can scale with multiple appliances for larger organizations. SC Magazine recently awarded TrueDLP a five-star “Best Buy” rating.
