Using Data Loss Prevention Software to Comply with New HIPAA Policies

Approximately a year ago, Cascade Healthcare Community Inc. hired CynergisTek Inc., an independent security consulting firm, to do a baseline risk assessment. Cynergistek used Code Green Networks Inc.'s TrueDLP for Healthcare platform to scan Cascade's databases, monitor outgoing transmissions and identify any data, such as patient information, that was not being adequately protected.

The results of that assessment convinced Cascade's CIO to purchase and deploy Code Green's data loss prevention solution internally, as a means of monitoring and enforcing security policies organization wide.

Code Green's Content Inspector was the easiest product to configure and write rules for. The rule language is simple and the graphical interface is very usable. Code Green breaks rule creation down into two categories: data and policy. One defines data to be blocked using a variety of tools, and then configures a policy to check for it. This was very straightforward and easy to change, with no need to restart the device or reload the settings. In the configuration simplicity arena, Code Green goes above and beyond all the other products.

In addition to its precision data identification capabilities, the Code Green appliance was very easy to deploy and represented what Scott McCall, CIO at Georgia's Own Credit Union, and his team felt was the right direction for DLP and its future evolution. "We wanted a vendor whose product strategy aligned with where we thought DLP would be going," McCall says. "Code Green used an appliance, which we liked, and they seemed to focus more on the fundamental cores of DLP-database fingerprinting, performance , data classification, and agent-based coverage at the endpoint -- rather than access control or other features."
